I was poking around Williams Sonoma this afternoon and found this really smart product that helps prevent cupcake casualties when in transport (even if it flips upside down!):
This is perfect for sending your child to school with a special treat for her birthday or other celebration. What a great way to get a cupcake from point A to point B without losing your icing (because we all know that would be a huge tragedy...)!

I still don't see how its going to prevent the worst part of cupcake failure....the smooshing of the frosting.
Hee hee - I agree that that's the worst part! I think there are some "teeth" that clamp down around the base of the cupcake when you close the little container - not enough to smoosh the base but just enough to hold it in place. Then, if the cupcake flips, it doesn't drop onto the icing. I think I want to buy one and test it out.
